I attended a McCain/Palin rally today with "1st Dude" Todd Palin speaking to an enthusiastic crowd of old and young and I might add the usual detractors as well. I spoke with many supporters who I personally feel were there because of Todd's wife as much as for the top of the ticket. He and 4 time Iditarod winner Martin Buser spoke briefly to the Central Maine crowd, but it was enough for many of us to know we counted.
The detractors and I were not going to agree on much, but one thing, the recent bailout was common ground. That this group of elected officials could have ignored us, and tossed our opinion aside without a backward glance appalled and angered us equally.
Exactly on 9/11/91 GHW Bush referred to a "new world order" before the US Congress, 10 years to the day prior to the World Trade Center tragedy. Today somewhere in the world his son is helping to blur national boundaries by using the economic crisis here to justify nationalizing a major portion of our economy and trashing the principal of a free market. Our national sovereignty is being sacrificed on the altar of greed and the perps are walking. Consider that since the bailout, 30-40% of US wealth invested in growth and security has been lost. What if Congress and the POTUS had done as I suspect 90%+ of us had wished, nothing! One Maine US Rep told me not one call, NOT EVEN ONE CALL, had come to their local office favoring the bailout. He is a Democrat. Yet, three of the four went back to the trough a few days later, added their favorite stipend or earmark and passed the bailout on to the President and he signed it and the markets have gone south and may continue the slide UNLESS....
Berlusconi of Italy says the rest of the world will help to save this failing and hapless Union of ours, because we are important or some such nonsense. We never needed international intervention in our finances and we certainly do not need nor want it now. This is GW's dad's forecast manifested in the globalization/universal takeover of our financial system. Trust me, this happening less than a month before a US Presidential election is no accident, but I am not sure what light pole this careening car is going to hit. I do know that middle America is going to suffer greatly and capitalism will never be the same.
Since McCain-Feingold, everything has change and we have nothing but US Senators left standing except for Sarah Palin and I am not sure what she signifies. Was it to mollify us on the right, to give us hope like we thought GW would? He got the Supremes right after a huge backlash, but really from the moment he got in bed with Kennedy over money for education, we were all very cautiously unoptimistic.
We are in on the end of the US as it existed for so many years and I am not quite sure what is in it for those digging the grave. The hole is big enough for us all, I only pray the perps are on the right team, the one where the book says, " if He is for us, who can be against us." It is not a question, though it is rhetorical.
